Y2K Aesthetic: Skincare Edition
Even if you didn't always vibe with the era, it's not difficult to see why the Y2K aesthetic is back by popular demand. Especially against the pressure of our current, often stressful times, visually retreating to an era of nostalgia is a beyond-inviting concept. However, skin and makeup possibilities are endless, with trending tutorials on TikTok to whimsical makeup looks from the show Euphoria. No one predicted what life would look like in 2021, but we have improved makeup products and techniques available to the average consumer today. Combining modern tricks with the style of the early years is a recipe for one of the biggest trends in beauty right now—and even an improvement. The Y2K look is built around the hottest trends of the 2000s: baby blues and pinks, glitter, butterflies, and so much lipgloss! But, with updated routines and products like a liquid highlighter, cut creases, and inclusive foundation shade ranges, which were simply hard to come by in the 90s.
The Y2K Trend
If you remember the early 2000s, you will notice that the updated Y2K looks like an era's true beauty. As wild as it seems now with Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, there weren't many beauty resources for the average person. Sephora didn't open until 1998, and most cosmetics were sourced from drugstores and department stores. Long-lasting formulas, inclusive shade ranges, and clean ingredients are now widespread; back then, wide shade ranges and skincare-as-makeup were nonexistent. So left to their own devices, young people of Y2K went for it, regardless of the products available. And beauty companies responded with the most fun, indulgent styles ever: body glitter, rhinestone-adorned eyelashes, holographic gloss, and endless pans of colorful shadows.
How to get a Y2K Beauty Look
Because so much of the Y2K makeup looks are centered around bright colors, a gel-based glitter won't smudge or transfer quickly, and it looks especially great layered under a smudged-out, brightly-colored eye crayon. For colors to pop, they need a pale shade base. To turn them up to full intensity, blend an eyeshadow base, primer, or even a white cream shadow across the lid before using the pigmented colors. Colors like lilac, periwinkle, pink, and green are solid options for trying the trend without veering into the bold territory. While much of the direction is typical of the more-is-more variety, wearable choices are also subdued. You can do a complete, significant look but choose one aspect of the face, like your eyes, to add bright color and keep the rest in a more neutral palette. Another possibility is balancing out a dark, rich lipstick with a coat of iridescent highlighter across the eyelids. If you're looking to incorporate the trend slowly, beginners should look into glitter or colored eyeliner. Another tip is to use sheer iridescent shadows on the middle of the eyelid or as lip gloss. Whether you're showing up with a baby blue eye moment or just starting to experiment with pink cheeks and berry-tinted gloss, Y2K makeup is like the era itself, all about self-expression. So, armed with our updated Juicy Tubes and tech-themed palettes, here's to continuing to party like 1999 just ended.
