Younger Brighter Skin with Vitamin C Serum

Skincare products with vitamin C are a growing popularity in the beauty industry. With all the beauty benefits, there is no wonder that consumers are looking for products with just that. Be careful not to choose any serum that contains vitamin C. You need to look for the type of vitamin C, concentration, and formulation.

What to Look For in Vitamin C Serum

Form of Vitamin C - Not all vitamin C are created equal. They come in different forms - L-ascorbic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, ascorbyl palmitate, and sodium ascorbyl phosphate, among others. Look for products that have good penetration for better effectiveness. L-ascorbic acid and textrahexyldecyl ascorbate vitamin C are the most common on the market.

Concentration - Potency of vitamin C should also be considered when looking for an effective serum. It is recommended that there be a minimum of 10% L-ascorbic acid. Some products offer higher concentration of either 15 or 20%. Note that increasing the concentration alone may not be as effective as combining it with other ingredients.

Formulation - Although vitamin C is effective alone, studies show that combining it with vitamin E and ferulic acid makes it a more potent antioxidant. Vitamin E, an antioxidant itself, enhances the function of vitamin C. Ferulic acid, enhances both vitamin C and vitamin E. Thus, delivering more effective results.

Packaging - Vitamin C breaks down when exposed to light, heat, or oxygen. Serums can be packaged in dark glass bottles, pumps, or individual capsules. The ideal packaging results in the least exposure to the things that degrade the potency of the product, making it less effective. A vitamin C serum turns yellow when it has oxidized. Storing them in the refrigerator or transferring to smaller bottles can help prolong the life of the serum.

Benefits of Vitamin C

Anti-aging - Vitamin C helps to reduce wrinkles and premature aging. The antioxidants protect the skin from the sun, pollution, and environmental damage. Studies also show that it stimulates the growth of collagen, a protein that gives skin its structure and elasticity.

Brightens Skin - Vitamin C is known to improve skin tone by fading and preventing brown spots and pigmentation. It inhibits melanin, a dark color pigment in the skin, resulting in a brighter complexion.
